Analog vs PWM & other newbie ?s

Post by DeeAnnMG »

Hi all,

I'm new to the hobby and about to pull the trigger on a RA controller, but have a couple questions.

First, this is what I'm working with (what I need to control):

CAD Lights PLS-100 skimmer - Tesla Svelte LED - EHEIM compact+ 3000 return - 2X VorTech MP10ES - 2X 75w Cobalt heaters

Questions:
1) My lights are dimmable, so do of need analog or PWM?
2) I would also like to add the wifi attachment and maybe the leak detector. So, do I need a Plus, or will the base model work for me?
3) Will I be able to change VorTech modes, even though I don't own the "W" model?
4) I'm not a coder. Will I have problems setting up my system?

Thanks,
DeeAnn

1. Ask the manufacturer of the fixture. I don't think they are dimmable by third party controllers.
2. I'd go with the RA+ and not have to worry about future updates/expansion.
3. No. You need the W version drivers assuming you get the RF expansion module.
4. We have the Reef Angel Wizard :)

1) The light is definitely dimmable by third party controllers. I asked before buying them. So, will PWM work, or do I need analog, or do I need to get that info from the manufacturer?
3) Bummer!
4) Nice!

3) Okay, I found out that I can upgrade my ES to W's with an RF expansion chip. So, I'm good there.
4) Still need to know if I need to go analog or PWM though. I'll wait for an answer before I place my order. I don't want to make anymore mistakes.

I couldn't find any datasheet or any info in their website.
It doesn't even mention being controlled by 3rd party controllers.
I suggest you contact the manufacturer.

Yeah, the info online isn't extensive, but they're very responsive to email. I will email them.

Okay, so I now know that I need the analog dimming. But now I have a new question. Do I need to buy a cable?

You will need the dimming port lead wire sold in the webstore.
