pH probe not registering.

Post by titusmaul »

I suspect the pH probe that shipped with my reef angel plus to be bad or maybe I am just really confused but here is the problem. No matter what solution the probe is placed in the number registered is always 885. I can use calibration fluid (7 or 10) same number. I can use vinegar, same number. It is like the probe is just not registering anything.

Did you remove and discarded the storage bottle?
If so, look at the tip of the probe. Does it have a little glass bulb?

Yes and yes I actually still have the storage bottle sitting next to my tank because I forgot to toss it, but yes I removed it from the probe.

Let's try this.
Get a paper clip and unfold it.
Remove the probe from the BNC connector of the head unit
Using the paper clip, insert one end of it inside the tiny hole in the center of the BNC connector in the head unit.
The other end, just touch the external round shell of the same connector.
What we are trying to accomplish is a short between the center and the shell of the BNC connector.
Now, go into calibration mode and let me know what number you see.

It jumps around a lot but between 550 and 880.

If my thought process is correct a solid short would be around 880+, thus meaning the probe is shorted out.

would I be correct in assuming that the hardware behind the BNC is just measuring the resistance of whatever is connected to it?

It's measuring voltage.
The ph probe generates a tiny voltage per pH read.
There seems to be a problem with the hardware and not the probe.
I think you will need to send it back for us to look at both the head unit and the probe.
PM me for RMA.
