Portal: Unreachable Address

Post by RadJag »

I have had my reef angel running for a couple of months now with no issue.

Today, I went to the portal to turn my lights on early, and I it tells me unreachable address.

The light is blinking slow green, and the parameters are updated and correct whenever I reload the page.

What do I need to do?

Looks like port forwarding in your router not setup correctly.

What would have caused it to change? How should I go about making the correction?

internet routers can change their wan ip address and also reallocate internal ip addresses.
You need to make sure that the port forwarding in your router is pointing correctly to your wifi attachment.

I don't know what that means. I took several hours setting all of this up the first time, am I going to have to go through this frustration every couple of months?

Plugging the wifi attachment into my mac tells me:
Additional installation required to use serial.

I have tried changing USB ports, closing everything and doing it again. What is going on.

It's not the wifi attachment.
It's your router that is not setup correctly.

That's all fine and good, but nothing else connected to my wifi is giving me issues.

I am working with an Arris TG862 and have comcast as a provider. It is recognizing the wifi attachment.

RadJAg, the reason nothing else is giving you issues, is that most likely nothing else requires port forwarding.

You need to make sure you have two things set within your routers settings(Not your wifi unit).

in the DHCP or networking settings where you see all the currently assigned IP addresses for your devices you should have an option to Reserve an IP address. You need to reserve the IP address for your WIFI attachment so it never changes its local IP address.

Then you need to go into the advanced settings and find port forwarding and make sure you have port 2000 forwarded to the IP address you reserved for your Wifi unit.

How do I find the IP address assigned to the unit. The only information I had saved was the address it was all forwarded to.

And why can I not connect to the wifi utility?

There is no download needed.
You must log into your router and set it up for port forwarding properly.
The issue is in your router and not the wifi attachment.
Every single router out there in the market is setup by default to consider all incoming connections as hostile and it WILL block it.
The router doesn't know you are not hostile. That's where port forwarding comes in. If setup correctly, it will instruct the router to let it go of that incoming traffic and it will forward it to your wifi attachment that is behind the router.
Another user wrote a little tutorial that may help you.
http://forum.reefangel.com/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=1190
You can also search in the internet on how to do it in your particular router or call your internet provider/router manufacturer.
There is also a software that automates simple key pushes that I've heard works pretty good:

Ok, I was able to at least have my computer recognize the wifi attachment after downloading and older version of wifi utility, but now it tells me:

Error: please disconnect and then reconnect

Every time. I am not doubting you that the issue is with the router. I would simply like to know why I cannot access my wifi attachment through wifi utility

Ahhh
You updated the firmware.
I think there is something in this firmware that is not working correctly.
I'm not so sure what the manufacturer updated that is causing this conflict.
Another user also had the same problem when he did the firmware update:
http://forum.reefangel.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=4294
Problem is, Tera term is a windows software.
If you want to use a MacOSX software, you will need to use Coolterm and you will need to manually type all the commands instead of just running the macro in the post above.

I have a Surface running windows 8, if I download all of the reef angel apps on here, will that give me an easier time? Should I download the newest version?

I appreciate your help.

If you install tera term in a windows computer, you will be able to follow the same steps in the other thread.
