Chiller question

Post by reefcycle »

I have a 1/3 HP chiller rated at 7.2 amp draw. With the MH and dosing pumps and STD lights wouldn't I kick the breaker? I really want my RA to control my chiller but don't want to kill it. I know 7.2a is the kick draw and it lowers to 2a while running. I just don't want to blow nothing up.

I think you would be fine if it runs at 2A with motor start-up of 7.2A
As you mentioned, it could trigger the breaker, but the breaker would need to be overloaded for a little while for it to trip.
Any breaker is designed to trip almost instantly in case of short and a few seconds to several minutes in case of overload, depending on how much overload it is.
Inrush current or motor start-up don't last too long.

That's what I thought. I'm still worried though not related since my apartment is old electric and my tank uses 7-8 amp area constant which is fine on 15 a circuit. However 97 % of all outlets are tied in. With the exception of fridge heat washer dryer. So I don't want to push breaker to off when not home
