Dosing pump questions

Post by jjdezek »

I'm at the point I need to get dosing pumps to dose alk and cal. How do the dosing pumps hook up and work with the reef angel? Does it need an outlet or does it connect through PWM ports?

You can also use the Power Control Expansion.

What are the advantages/differences between these pumps and BRS pumps?

Off the bat I would say 12V DC vs 110V AC which is good if you want to use the power module instead of the relay outlet bar.

The other difference is rate. The BRS are 1.1ml/minute and I believe RA are 75ml/min

I'm not partial. I have BRS pumps and am happy with them.

It really depends what you are doing... IMO when dosing anything that affects chemistry of your water, the slower the better.. no questions asked.

If you are just topping off fresh water.. I'd say support RA and get his ATO... but if you are using Kalk mix in your ATO I would recommend for a slower pump like his dosing pump at 45ml/min or 75ml/min, not sure if his product page is a typo, it says .75ml/sec or get the BRS 50ml/min ATO.

The chemistry behind how kalk works really persuades you to go with a much slower ATO.

Read this before you decide to go the two part path. http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2005-01/rhf/index.htm

Kalkwasser can keep your calc/Kh and pH stable up to a certain amount of corals... and at a fraction of the cost. It's so cheap to buy kalk mix I do wouldn't bother making my own. Think it's $11 for a gallon of it from BRS and I only use 6 teaspoons per 5 gallons of fresh top off water....

What about clogging ATO pumps/lines?

I've never clogged any line...? the Solids should be fully dissolved.... just pumping water.. And the pumps are siphon free so the only time there is air in the line is when you first start pumping on first use and if you ever let the pump run pulling from an empty container...
