More dimming channels!

Post by joshlawless »

The dimming expansion provides 6 additional channels. If someone were crazy, and wanted to have a lighting setup with multiple, multiple-channel fixtures, and to drive each channel of each fixture separately (e.g., to simulate directional light from morning, to noon, to evening), it would take a good number of these 6-channel dimmers to accommodate such a set up (and would hasten the setup towards the 10-expansion limit).

Is it possible to make a dimming expansion with more than 6 channels? 12 would be nice.

Will first off you get 2 channels built in. So you're already starting with 8, not 6. I do believe you can have multiple dimming modules, but Roberto would need to confirm this.

But if you wanted 21 channels for LED dimming, and another 3 for pumps, you would need a total of four dimming expansions, which would eat up 40% of your total expansion unit budget. If you also wanted the I/P expansion (1), an extra relay box (2), the salinity expansion (3), the pH expansion (4), the ORP expansion (5), the power control expansion (6), and a water level expansion (7), you'd have 11 expansions, and no way to plug in all of them.

I can special build one with 16 channels, but there would be costs involved for development and it would be at least a month to get the board made.

I'm interested - PM me with the cost structure if you would like. I'm still in the writing-checks-for-equipment phase, and don't have anything hooked up or in need of controlling yet, so a month delay won't be a problem.
