I am building an led fixture, it will have 4 drivers from steve's leds. I assume I am going to need the expansion mod to dim all of them to different levels, and add effects and such. Does it just connect to the head unit? What gauge wire will I need to use?

It doesn't connect to the head unit, but the relay box.
You can use 24 gauge or lower without a problem.

Isee. Were I to put off the mod for now, will the built in dimming be OK to hook up to all the drivers at once?

Yes, you can hook up several as long as the maximum draw is 40mA.

BTW what type of head does the relay side take?

The lead wires are available on the webstore, but I think they are called 2510.
