With the water level exp. will I still need to use the float switches?
Could the switches, or ports be used for other or different input then?

Yep
absolutely. I use one port for my skimmate collector (avast pressure switch) and the other i have both float switches connected in parallel that turn off my return pump if water level in the sump gets too high/low.
