Without a WiFi module are you still able to connect this controller to the PC via ethernet or USB?

USB there's a windows client you can use and also there's tools you can use to proxy the serial over IP as well.

i think there's a thread on here where somebody made an ethernet adapter for the controller to use. so it's a homemade item. i thought people said it worked well, but i don't recall off-hand.

Yes but you can also use an arduino ethernet shield I believe.
