Low Ph Probe Reading

Post by rfungkf »

Hello Roberto,

I got the RA+ back in September. Got the system setup few weeks ago and the ph probe setup about a week ago. The ph reading seems to be normal until today where the ph dropped to 6.40. I tried to recalibrate and the ph read the same thing. I tested my tank using a ph test kit and it is above 8.0. Not sure what happened. Nothing in my system change. Here is the reading from initial setup and today recalibration.

Date: 10/31/2012

Ph 7: 555
Ph 10: 849

----------------------------------

Date: 11/6/2012

ph 7: 539
ph 10: 834

I did read couple of th posts about bad probe. My is the black color one. Let me know if you need any info. to solve this issue. Thanks.

Can you try placing the probe in a cup of tank water and dip the probe in the cup?
What readings do you get now?

Hey Roberto,

I tried placing the probe in a cup of tank water several times. Once I put the probe into the tank water, the ph increased. here are the readings.

1st time - 7.50
2nd time - 7.60
last time - 7.97 (note i left the probe out of the water and put this back into the cup of tank water about 2 hours later.)

Note that I only submersed the probe 1/2 way and not fully submerse into the cup of tank water. Once I fully submersed the probe, the reading will drop from ranging from 5.05 to 6.50. Also the LCD graph on the head unit also showed the green ph reading in dfferent ranges. It is not the like the constant line I see for the first 7 days prior to having this.

From what I see the drop happened when I fully submersed the probe into the water. My though could be the sealant of the probe is bad. Please let me know if you have any thought. Thanks.

I am having the same problem as the OP - I bought my RA around the same time as well, but only just got around to connecting and calibrating the pH probe last night.. It seemed to read OK last night, had a reading of 7.6 pretty steady through the night. This seemed low but within reason considering how sealed up our apartment is in the winter. I checked it against my API test kits and it seemed close (the kit was maybe more like 7.8 - 8.0). But since a couple hours ago the probe has been reading 6.9x-7.0, and another round of tests shows the same as before - I even tried the low range test kit to confirm it was over 7.6.

I put the probe in a cup of tank water a few minutes ago and the reading started going up immediately. It's now bouncing between 7.32 and 7.35

The probe I have is one of the black ones. Should I get a new probe?
