Wifi problems after 7 months

Hi Guys,
Can somebody please help me figuring out what to do with my wifi attachment.
After 7 months working flawlessly, I noticed that I couldn't connect to my portal. Out of the 20 times I refresh the page I was able to access my portal maybe once. All the other times I get unreachable address. (wifi was blinking green).
So I figured out, maybe my router is not working well. unfortunately that is not the case. I did a factory reset on the router and set everything up as before with the port forwarding and all. Same name and password. Wifi attachment still not connecting to my portal.
So i thought , why not reset the wifi attachment to factory defaults, which I did. (now the wifi is blinking green and blue). Big mistake ! When I launch the wifi utility software it asks me to select the serial port (which is 3 in my case) and then click on connect, so far so good, it talks to the wifi attachment and then I clicked on update firmware, now I got a message "error, please disconnect and reconnect the usb-ttl cable and try again". After trying again, same message.
Also if I try to setup the wifi attachment after filling in the ssid and password, I get the same message.
My guess is that the usb-ttl cable is malfunctioning as when I try to connect the reefangel to the computer, it says 90% out of the same 20 times usb device not recognized and windows detected a problem. I have un-installed the reefangel controller program and reinstalled it again in the hope that the drivers would be installed correctly, with no luck.
Like I said earlier, my guess is that the usb-ttl cable is malfunctioning. Having said that, it then doesn't explain why I was not able to connect to the portal.
It worked fine for 7 months, router is still working well with other devices, so the problem is not with the router.
Hope you guys can help me out here.
Leslie
