Multiple reboots uncalled reboots in the past days

Post by tngo »

Hi all,

I'm getting multiple untriggered reboots in a day, sometimes every 3 to 4 minutes. It'll be stable for long maybe half a day then cycle through a bunch of reboots. This started happen last week. I hadn't changed anything to the unit so was wondering if anyone was encountering random multiple reboots.

Thanks.

Any signs of water on the board?

Hi Roberto,

I keep head unit away from the tank and sump, but I'll take the unit apart this weekend to see if I have any rust or water damage.

Thanks,

I check the controller externally but didn't see any rust on the main unit. The main cause of the reboots seem to be coming from the expansion hub. I disconnected some ports and reconnected until I was able to get all of the modules running. There are still some reboots occurring but a lot less often. The reboots seem to come when there is a bus lock. Once the buslock gets cleared it reboots for some reason. Previously once the buslock clears there wasn't a reboot, or maybe I didn't notice it them.

Can I connect 2 expansion hubs directly to the two usb ports on the main unit? I wanted to shorten a couple of usb cables.

Thanks,
Tim

I connected a second expansion hub to the main unit to shorten the usb cable length to some modules. The main unit is behaving better now. Seems I still have some bus lock issues through one of the expansion hubs. These bus locks get cleared by the main unit on its own, and the main unit isn't randomly rebooting anymore. I'll grab some new usb cables to see if I can resolve the minor buslocks.

In regards to the usb ports on the expansion hubs, any way you can make the boards to accommodate the type of usb breakout cables similar to those on motherboards? This would make it easier for me get rid of the rust that can occur on the usb headers, or at least easier to replace.

Thanks,

I was able to do more testing to see if I could find out the buslock issues occurring recently. I replaced the expansion hubs with new ones. I have an RF expansion, dimming expansion, star relay expansion, plus relay expansion, pH expansion, salinity expansion.

Setup A
Star-->Exp Hub1-->star relay expansion+dimming expansion+RF expansion
-->Exp Hub2-->plus relay expansion+pH expansion+salinity expansion
This setup was giving me buslocks every couple of minutes and reboots 3-4 times a day. I completely removed the exp hub 2 branch and the buslock didn't completely go away. The star relay to the expansion seems to cause the buslocks so I had to remove the Hub1 and directly connect the star relay expansion to the main unit to remove the bus locks.

Setup B
Star-->Exp Hub1-->dimming expansion+RF expansion+exp Hub2-->plus relay expansion+sal. expansion+pH expans.
-->star relay expansion
This setup caused the plus relay to keep to go crazy turning on and off ports randomly, so I didn't test it for too long.

Setup C
Star-->star relay expansion
-->exp hub1+plus relay expan+RF expan+pH expan+salinity expan+dimming expan
This setup I was using over the past 2 years with intermittant buslocks but was stable enough until about 2 months ago.

Setup D
Star -->start relay expansion
-->exp hub1+plus relay expan+RF expan+dimming expan
This setup I'm currently running and seems to be stable, will reconnect the pH and salinity expansions if the buslocks stops.

Tried to add hub2+ph expan to hub1 branch in setup D, bus lock. But adding ph expan to hub1 branch seems to work. Looks like it's going to be back to setup C, original setup. Seems the previous expansion hub was failing somehow. Going to wrap this hub in some anti static bag and tape the areas that the usb come through to prevent future corrosion issues.

Hi Roberto.

Looks like reboots are starting to occur pretty frequently again, sometimes in succession. The head unit will reboot and then reboot again even before the lcd displays any values. The Wifi expansion fixed the issues with the RF module and random feed starts. I've removed most accessories except for the relay and expansion relay which are still connected to the head unit but the reboots will still happen. Wondering if another wifi expansion would be better, or could the head unit usb be having issues? The head unit is fine if nothing is connected to it, but I can't leave it that way for too long to test it. I took the head unit apart to see if there was any water damage, but nothing that I could see. Putting it back together, it ran stable for a couple of days then the reboots started to continue again. Can the WDT be disabled?

Thanks,
Tim

Are you able to move all the expansion modules to the cloud hub to test?

Good idea. Connected a relay hub to the cloud hub and connected all the accessories to it. So far no reboots the past 2 hours. However the salinity exp, and ph exp aren’t reading out proper values. Salinity is 7 and ph exp is 0.

It's been about half a day now without any reboots, so it's looking good! Tried to cycle the power on the salinity exp and pH exp but the readings are still not correct.

It seems I had to recalibrate the expansion probes to get them read properly. The salinity probe calibration worked fine on the cloud hub. The pH expansion wouldn't calibrate, so I hooked it back in to the head unit to calibrate.

Thanks
