How does the water level sensor work?

Is the pipe airtight and the rising water compresses the air inside?

If so does the pipe have to be mounted really securely so it doesn't shoot out of the water trying to float?

Correct. It pushes the air and creates pressure, but not enough to lift the pipe. It's very low pressure.
I leave my pipe just standing in my sump sitting at the bottom. It's not mounted or anything.

I was meaning to ask this myself.

Is their a length limit on the air tube that goes to the box? is it strong enough tubing not to kink? If I cannot get my float switch fiasco straightened i may be interested in this mod, but All my water and air hoses run through cableways and as such I would want to run said air hoses through my cable\Hose management as well.

It's very very low pressure...
.57psi max at 100%
So, the longer the run, the less pressure you get at the end.
I think you can compensate by using a bigger diameter pipe though, because the bigger the diameter, the more displacement of air you would get through the tubing.

I take it the top of the "pipe" is plugged with a cap and air hose and the bottom is left open and submerged. So whatever air is trapped in the tube compresses the air up through the pipe and tube to the sensor? like when you put a glass upside down in the water and trap air inside...

Correct, here's a picture of mine, zip tied to the sump drain pipe.
