IS there an emulator or simulator available so that I can debug better?

No, but you can use VS if you are using windows.
There is a debugger addon for Arduino.
There are a couple people using it.

I tried that, but it scared me. I couldn't figure out how to upload a sketch! Anyone care to help me out?
