will wave maker work for a single pump

Post by jemw »

I only want to have one pump using the wavemaker function. Are there any restrictions I should be aware of?

Nope. You can use just one :)

It doesn't make waves... :(
I've had nothing but problem with koralias. They seem to spin backwards and become weaker and weaker. I finally gave up, threw them in the garbage and bought vortechs.
Still use koralias though... Bought 2 new ones, but in always on mode.
They have not nearly the same flow as vortech for the size.
Mine are 3 times bigger inside the tank, but 10 times cheaper too.

Just to give my experience with Korlia's...I have the Evos 1050s and they have fixed those issues Roberto talks about...they are designed for wavemakers, but that really means just "on/off"...only controllable pumps can actually make "waves", and by controllable, that means pumps that can vary their speed, ramping up then ramping down, or those pumps that are designed for rapid on off (like a second or less, like in a Tunze wavebox). Koralia's are just not designed that way (except for their controllable ones). I use the Evos on the wavemaker function and they have worked flawlessly for the past three months...FWIW

I've been using two Hydor Koralia Evolution 750's on alternating 15-30sec cycles for several months without any issues. They do not generate 'waves', but I noticied a huge difference in LPS extension when running them on alternating cycles instead of always on.

Do you use the vortech system to run your pumps or your reef angel?

I personally have both.
I use 2 Vortech and 2 Koralias.
All 4 can be controlled by Reef Angel, though the Koralias are just on/off and Vortech can have speed control.

I use the RA to control them.
