iPhone app and external connection?

Hi guys, apologies if this seems like a stupid question, but I am having problems connecting with the app.
The app works fine when I'm within my home wireless connection, however when I try to connect from an external wifi or 3G, it does not update?
I am thinking it maybe something to do with port forwarding but not sure?
The portal works fine.
Also, just to confirm, am I be able to update from 3G rather than wireless or is it only possible with wireless?

Yes it does sound like a port forwarding issue. If the public ip:2000 port is not forwarded to the internally networked machine/device then you wont be able to touch it from the outside world.
Updating RA over wireless is not an option at this time to my knowledge..

Thanks for the reply!!
Can someone help me set up my port forwarding - it does not seem straightforward!
My router wants me to enter the info in the pic attached - what should I enter?

You should have an area for Port Range Forwarding(which you posted above) and a section for just a single Port Forward. In this scenario we really dont need a range of ports but just a single port(2000).
Protocol you can set to TCP; Port would be 2000; Then the 3rd field would be to what internal address you are wanting this forwarded too. Ex. 192.168.1.105

Hi, definitely the pic is the only area that I can assign port forwarding there is no other area?

If you are talking about updating the parameters on your iphone app, then yes, you can do it over 3G, but requires you to setup port forwarding.
On your router, you can still use that page with the ranges and shoyuld work fine too, I think.
Yuo can use
Port Range: 2000 - 2000
Translate to: 2000 - 2000
Trigger Port: 2000
Then go to
http://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/open-ports/ to check if you have an open port 2000.
If it says open, you are good to go.
To access the controller over 3G, you need to use the IP address your internet provider gives you, which can change every now and then.
To know which ip address your ISP gave you, on your home computer, go to
http://www.whatismyip.com

Tried the above, but says port is closed??
Any other thoughts?

dazza, do you have your internal ip address exposed to the outside world? Most routers have it under a DMZ section or i have seen them called gaming mode or something like that. Essentially you are exposing an internal ip address to your external ip you get from your ISP

Not sure exactly what your talking about to be honest, but I have set as per Robertos instructions above.
I have no other port forwarding options so maybe it time to look for a new router?

You can find that out by visiting

Are you sure the port forwarding is working?
If you can browse your controller, the app will work.
http://ipaddress:2000
Check if the port 2000 is open here:
