New RA Upload error

I just connected everything and used the wizard to set it up, but when I go to upload the status light flashes a couple times on the controller and then I get an error message on my computer that says "error uploading". I think I have everything connected correctly, is this a common issue?

Make sure you have the right "board" selected. Also make sure cable is plugged in right. Two common problems

It's the regular RA so I selected Reef Angel Controller (Also Tried Reef Angel Controller with Optiboot...not sure what that is but I tried it). As far as the cable it's the black wire all the way to the right correct?

You should use w/ optiboot.
Check if the serial port selected is the correct one.

Did all that.
I also had a friend come over who has a RA Plus (He's the one who convinced me this system was the way to go) and even he couldn't get it to work. At this point I'm going to assume I have a bad controller and return the unit.
