start up for dummies?

I just picked up a used reef angel and I can turn it on and then i get lost lol

I tried connecting thru the usb cored and its not doing anything

I downloaded the reefangel program from the site.

What are the basic steps to getting this thing going

I just want to connect it to the computer first then I will take the next big step
