Wifi - can't connect on LAN

Post by romebaby »

Need a little help. I have the plus analog w/wifi. I set it all up with the wizard, port forwarding in place, and while I can connect from the outside I can't connect from inside my house unless I assign the local IP in the browser or iphone app settings. I have 2 routers in the mix here, ISP one and dlink running tomato, and forwarded through both. I have DSL with a static IP

Local address is 192.168.0.7
My ext IP is 97.112.x.x

When I put 97.112.x.x:2000 on my iphone I can connect through 3G when I'm away from my house. When I'm on my home wifi I can't connect unless I change it to 192.168.0.7. Direct connect is on. Also on my home computer, in a browser, I can connect to 192. but not 97.

Portal account is setup, reads fine. I tried with the preset code and also compiled a custom one through the wizard which allowed me to input my portal username. No luck on either.

that's correct. Your router won't let you connect to the outside address UNLESS YOU ARE ON THE OUTSIDE NETWORK. That's why the phone works. Your PC's or other home devices have an address on the inside network and therefore can only see devices on their own network.

I think it is a limitation of your DSL router.
It needs to support loopback mode.
If it doesn't, your router can't see itself and will timeout.
If the router supports loopback, it can send requests out and it is also aware of itself, so when you tell it to request a page from its own wan ip address, it simply loops back and returns the internal route.
If it doesn't support loopback, it will send out the request to the internet, but obviously there is nobody out there to answer because the ip you are trying to reach is of the router itself.
I hope this explained a little bit. I don't know much in depth about this, but I have a cisco router that doesn't support loopback either. But, because I have a DNS server within the internal network, my request never reaches the router and I can resolve the problem by using domain names instead of ip addresses.

Ross - that would mean I would need to change the address on my phone when I leave the house and when I get home. I'm trying to hit a public IP which my router will send out, it's just not coming back in.

Roberto - thanks, that makes sense. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something before I started messing with my router settings. I'll play with it and report back.

Not figuring this out. I've tried all kinds of stuff, adding routes. There is no obvious "loopback mode" setting on either of my routers. If anyone has any info that might help feel free to chime in.

Have you considered using a service like http://www.no-ip.com/ that will always know your isp internet address. Then you can put in that address in your app and it will route to your reefangel?

If the Open Port Tool tells you that the port is open and accepting connections, this usually means that your server is already up and running, and visitors can reach it. Try having a friend connect to your server; if they can reach it, but you can’t, you may have a loopback error.

Thanks all, got it. My ISP router (Q1000) doesn't support NAT loopback. I had to set it to RFC 1483 Transparent Bridging on the WAN setup. Then I had to add my PPPoE credentials to my router running tomato (on the Basic/Network/WAN), which does support loopback. Essentially just turned my Q1000 into a modem only. Should have done that awhile ago, dealing with double port forwarding is kind of a pain. Thanks Roberto, figured it out reading the links you provided.
