Alternative to Float Switches

Has anyone tried to install an optical water level sensor instead of the mechanical float switches to the RA? I wanted something more reliable but can't seem to find these optical switches similar to the Tunze Osmolator ones. I was thinking to have a optical and a backup mechanical float switch. Could both these be hooked up to the 2 ports of the RA or do they both need to be mechanical type?

I looked into it briefly, but the float switches are backed up with the water level sensor fit my needs.

I have not, but I would think pressure vs optical, the pressure would be better. Not just because it's available in the webstore , but with optical, there is a chance that dirt would mess up with the reading, isn't it?

+1 on the pressure sensor. It works great and you know exactly where the level is should something be amiss.

You can easily code one float switch,both switches, the water level sensor or whatever combo for your ATO.

I use the Water Level Expansion and it has been rock solid.
I'm setting up the mechanical as a fail safe (ATO High).

Ok thanks, I like the idea of the water level expansion as primary and mechanical float as fail safe. I just wasn't sure as I remember a post here talking about a problem with the water level expansion in that it was reporting way off and had to be recalibrated again to bring back to spec.

Regarding the water level expansion, if the hose for the water level expansion gets salt or stuff in it, will it read incorrect pressure readings and report wrong water levels?

Fish76, I have had the water level expansion for about 3 months now and the hose is still squeaky clean. No problems whatsoever. I highly recommend it.

Nothing gets into the air line all the water stays in the pvc pipe.
