Plumbing / Electricity Questions with RA

Post by Smotz »

Hey All - wanted to run my plans by the group for thoughts.

I want to automate my top off system by using my water storage in the basement.

I have an RODI container and a Saltwater container.

Was going to install an external pump (I have a blueline 30x) between them with true unions coming out of each container. The RODI would be open most of the time, the saltwater for water changes.

I would plumb PVC to my display tank (about 24 feet total, 10ft head).
I was thinking about running an extension cord from my RA to the pump in the basement.

I would have to cut the cord and re-attach to get it through the flooring.

Would the extension cord be too long? Is that a fire hazard? Any other possible solutions?

just cut the end of the extension cord at the plug. and buy a replacement plug, I prefer cutting the female side.

Thanks for the reply - yea, that was my plan but I am wondering if its a fire hazard to have a 25ft extension cord with an external pump

Not if you use a cord rated for the amount of draw you will be pulling.
Also make sure your splice is water tight.
I would cut the make end off, run the cord from outside to inside and then re-attach the end so the splice is indoors and safe from the weather.

They sell 25' and up external power cords

If you are using an internal extension cord that could be a problem.
